If Invisible Braces Aren'T Right For You, Go For Lingual

Dentist Blog

Invisible braces are extremely popular because of how hard it is to tell that you're even wearing braces. However, they aren't right for everyone. People who need more dramatic alterations to their jaws or teeth generally don't qualify for invisible braces. If you count yourself among them, consider going with lingual braces instead for some of the same great advantages of invisible braces, with all the power of traditional braces.

Lingual Braces

Lingual braces are heavy-duty, metal braces that are adhered to your teeth and strung together with wire. However, unlike the braces you might be envisioning, lingual braces sit on the back of your teeth instead of the front. This means that when you smile, grin, talk, or laugh, they won't be visible. They can do all of the work of traditional braces from the inside of your mouth, hidden to the outside world.

The Advantage Over Invisible Braces

Metal braces are favored for quicker adjustments than invisible braces, and they can do more, too. This includes lingual braces. Although their placement is different than standard braces, they can still move teeth and the jaw just as effectively as traditional metal braces can.

This is a stark advantage over invisible braces. Invisible braces are very good at correcting spacing issues between teeth and correcting the alignment of individual teeth, but they are slow and can't do anything about jaw problems. Metal braces, both standard and lingual, excel in these fields. Lingual braces are often less expensive than invisible braces, too.

What To Expect

If you want lingual braces, your first step is to visit an orthodontist. Your orthodontist will examine your mouth, teeth, and jaw to determine if metal braces will work well for you. If they decide that they will, they'll take a mold of your mouth with precise measurements and begin a treatment plan. You may be given a retainer to perform minor adjustments before you begin wearing actual braces.

Once you're ready to be given braces, your orthodontist will install them. Braces don't require drilling, and are connected with strong dental adhesive. Once your braces are in place, you'll need to visit your orthodontist regularly to have them tightened.

Lingual braces are a great way of getting the advantages of metal braces without having to have your teeth covered in visible metal when you smile. If you want a straighter smile and can't get invisible braces, give lingual braces a try instead. Contact a dental office, like Reed & Sahlaney Orthodontics, LLP, for more help.
