6 Tips For Taking Care Of Porcelain Veneers

Dentist Blog

Veneers are thin shells of porcelain that are cemented on top of teeth to improve their appearance. They can fix a wide range of cosmetic dental issues, including crooked teeth, discoloration, and cracked teeth. While veneers are durable, they can still get damaged without proper care. Here are six tips for taking care of porcelain veneers.

1. Use the Right Toothpaste

Certain toothpastes are very abrasive and can wear away at your porcelain veneers. When shopping for new toothpaste, be sure to avoid ones that contain ingredients like hydrogen peroxide and sodium bicarbonate, as they can damage the surface of your veneers.

2. Avoid Biting Down on Hard Objects

If you are like many people, you've probably used your teeth to remove a clothing tag or open up a bottle before. This isn't just harmful to your natural teeth; it can also hurt your veneers. Hard objects can scratch the porcelain, leaving cracks and chips. Resist the urge to chew on hard items to protect your veneers.

3. Limit Stain-Causing Foods and Drinks from Your Diet

While porcelain veneers are more resistant to staining than natural teeth, that doesn't mean they can't get discolored after a while. To prevent this from happening, try to avoid stain-causing foods and beverages from your diet, such as coffee, red wine, and pasta sauce, as much as possible. If you do have one of the drinks or foods once in a while, rinse your mouth out with water afterward.

4. Stop Grinding Your Teeth

Teeth grinding is quite a common habit and can do a lot of damage to your teeth, including your porcelain veneers. The pressure from grinding will eventually wear down your veneers. If you seem to grind your teeth while you sleep, you should talk to your dentist about wearing a custom mouth guard.

5. Get Your Veneers Polished

If your porcelain veneers are losing some of their shine, consider getting them professionally polished at your dentist's office. The treatment is very quick and will leave your veneers bright and shiny.

6. Visit Your Dentist

If you have porcelain veneers, it's even more important to visit your dentist twice a year for a checkup. He or she will examine your veneers and check for issues like cracks, chips and discoloration. If your dentist finds a problem, he or she can fix it before it gets worse.

If you experience any issues with your porcelain veneers, talk to a dental office like Dental Implant & Cosmetic, PC.
